George Eastman Museum + Arbor Midtown Wedding

Rochester Wedding Photographer

There are some weddings that make you stop for a second when you are going through the final gallery and think, yeah, this one is special.

Mariah and Nick’s wedding was one of those weddings for me.

As a Rochester wedding photographer, I get to photograph a lot of beautiful venues throughout Western New York, but this wedding brought together two Rochester spaces that created an especially incredible combination: a ceremony at the George Eastman Museum followed by a reception at Arbor Midtown.

It is a pairing I do not get to photograph very often, and honestly, I was thrilled when I realized what the entire day was going to look like.

The historic architecture and gardens of the George Eastman Museum gave us an elegant, timeless setting for the beginning of the day, while Arbor Midtown completely changed the energy for the reception. By the end of the night, there was live saxophone on the dance floor, a packed room, incredible sunset light, and a few minutes where I pulled Mariah and Nick away from the party to make some of my favorite portraits of the day.

Add in two rolls of 120 medium format film and some gorgeous drone shots, and this wedding ended up being one of those weddings I am incredibly grateful to have been there for, one that I am especially proud to have in my Rochester wedding photography portfolio.

Stay Tuned for the wedding video...

Getting Ready at Arbor Midtown

Every wedding story starts somewhere, and for Mariah and Nick, it started with the anticipation of getting ready.

I love photographing this part of a wedding day because it is where everything still feels just a little bit unknown. The dress is being finished, final touches are happening, family and friends are beginning to gather, and everyone knows that in a few hours, the entire day will be moving at full speed.

The bridal and groom suites are Arbor Midtown are some of the best. Beautiful morning light comes through floor to ceiling glass, tall enough to show off it's grand scale, and just tall enough to reach with a ladder when hanging the dress.

My approach to wedding photography is documentary at its core, so I am always looking for the little moments that happen naturally during this part of the day rather than simply photographing a checklist of details.

The nervous laughs.

The bonding moments.

The final adjustments.

The people who have been waiting for this day just as much as the couple has.

Those photographs become especially meaningful years later because they bring you back to what the beginning of the day actually felt like.

First Looks with the Girls

Before Mariah and Nick had their first look together, there were two other first looks that were every bit as meaningful.

The first was with her girls, taking place inside the beautiful bridal suite. There is something about having your closest friends and bridesmaids see you fully dressed for the first time that creates an entirely different kind of emotion. The excitement, the tears, the laughter, and the realization that the wedding day is actually happening all seem to hit at once.

These are some of my favorite moments to photograph because there is no need to manufacture anything. The people in the room already have years of history together, and that history comes through naturally in the photographs.

Then came Mariah's first look with her dad

For this one, we made our way to one of the most distinctive architectural features at Arbor Midtown: the beautifully preserved historic escalators.

Having Mariah's dad wait at the top of the escalators created such a unique setting for the moment. The preserved details of the building gave the photographs a sense of history and character, while the emotion of a father seeing his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time made the setting almost secondary.

It was one of those moments where the location and the emotion worked perfectly together.

As an Arbor Midtown wedding photographer, I love finding opportunities like this throughout the venue. The building has so many distinctive architectural details that can become part of the story rather than simply serving as a backdrop. In this case, the historic escalators became the setting for a moment Mariah and her dad will hopefully remember forever.

And then, after the tears, the hugs, and a few photographs, it was finally time for Mariah and Nick's first look.

First Look in the Gardens of the George Eastman Museum

The first look took place in the gardens of the George Eastman Museum, and it was an incredible way to begin the portrait portion of the day.

The Eastman Museum is such a unique Rochester wedding location because it gives couples an extraordinary combination of historic architecture, landscaped gardens, and natural surroundings. The museum is a National Historic Landmark, and its wedding offerings include several historic gardens and mansion spaces.

For a photographer, that means there is an incredible amount to work with.

For a film photographer, the Eastman Museum is a dream.

For Mariah and Nick, we were able to move through the gardens and create portraits that felt romantic and editorial without making the day feel like one giant photo shoot.

And then there was the first look itself.

That moment when Nick turned around and saw Mariah for the first time was one of those photographs that did not need much direction from me. My job was simply to be in the right place, let the moment happen, and photograph what was actually happening between the two of them.

That is one of my favorite parts of being a wedding photographer in Rochester. Beautiful locations can give you an incredible backdrop, but it is the emotion happening inside that backdrop that makes the photograph matter.

George Eastman Museum Wedding Ceremony

Mariah and Nick's ceremony took place in the main courtyard of the George Eastman Museum, surrounded by the historic character of one of Rochester's most recognizable landmarks.

There is something about getting married at a place with this much history that immediately gives a wedding a sense of permanence.

The courtyard created beautiful architectural framing for the ceremony while still keeping the focus on Mariah and Nick. It also gave me opportunities to photograph the larger scene alongside the smaller moments happening between the couple, their families, and their guests.

The reaction photographs were some of my favorites.

The smiles.

The tears.

The people watching from the audience.

The moment Mariah and Nick finally became husband and wife.

Those are the photographs that turn a beautiful venue into a meaningful wedding gallery.

And as a wedding photographer that loves the history of the Eastman Museum, this is exactly what I love about photographing weddings here. The architecture and gardens already provide an incredible visual foundation, so the photographs do not have to feel overly constructed. The location can simply be part of the story.

The Eastman Museum is also particularly fitting for a photographer because of its connection to photography and film. The museum is a world-leading institution for photography and cinema, making the location feel almost perfectly suited for a wedding documented with both digital photography and medium format film.

From the Eastman Museum to Arbor Midtown

After the ceremony and portraits at the George Eastman Museum, the day shifted gears completely.

We headed back downtown to Arbor Midtown for the reception.

This is one of the things I love about this particular Rochester wedding combination. The Eastman Museum and Arbor Midtown feel completely different from each other, but they complement each other incredibly well.

The Eastman Museum gives you gardens, history, elegance, and timeless architecture.

Arbor Midtown gives you energy.

The historic downtown Rochester building has an entirely different visual personality, with dramatic architecture, large windows, chandeliers, and an incredible sense of scale.

And it photographs so well.

As a Rochester wedding photographer, this is exactly the kind of reception environment I love. There are beautiful spaces for portraits, historic architectural details throughout the venue, and enough visual variety that the reception portion of the gallery does not start feeling repetitive.

It also has the kind of layout that lets the day transition naturally from dinner and formalities into a full-blown party.

Mariah and Nick's reception definitely became a party.

First Dances, Bouquet Toss & a Saxophone on the Dance Floor

The reception started with the more traditional wedding moments: first dances, dinner, and the formal celebrations that everyone came together for.

Then the energy changed.

DJ Sonic Rue brought a saxophone onto the dance floor, and suddenly the room felt completely different.

There are some wedding receptions where people slowly make their way onto the dance floor.

This was not one of those receptions.

The dance floor was packed, the saxophone was going, and there were photographs happening everywhere I looked.

This is where documentary wedding photography really shines for me. There is no need to manufacture energy when a room is already full of it. I can move through the crowd, anticipate what is about to happen, and photograph the reactions as they unfold.

The bouquet toss added another classic wedding moment to the evening, but some of my favorite photographs were actually the ones happening around it: friends laughing, people dancing, guests reacting, and all of those tiny interactions that would be impossible to recreate later.

Those are the photographs that make a wedding gallery feel alive.

Stealing Mariah & Nick Away for Sunset Portraits

Eventually, I did something that I do at almost every reception when the light cooperates.

I stole the couple away from their own party.

Just for a few minutes.

The courtyard next to Arbor Midtown was catching some gorgeous evening light, and I knew we had a very small window to take advantage of it.

So Mariah and Nick stepped away from the dance floor, and we went outside.

The warm sunset light completely changed the feel of the photographs. After spending the reception surrounded by music, friends, family, and movement, having a few quiet minutes together gave us a completely different side of the wedding day.

These are some of my favorite photographs from the entire gallery.

They are romantic without feeling overly posed, and the warm evening light gives the images a softness that you simply cannot recreate at noon.

One of the things I always tell couples is that you do not need to disappear from your wedding reception for an hour to get beautiful portraits.

Sometimes five minutes is all we need.

And in this case, those five minutes were absolutely worth it.

Capturing the day on Medium Format Film

I also photographed two rolls of 120 medium format film throughout Mariah and Nick's wedding day. For a wedding at the Eastman Museum, this feels appropriate.

There is something about film that feels different. The colors are gorgeous, the skin tones are beautifully soft, and the images have a depth and nostalgic quality that digital photographs simply do not quite replicate.

Film has a way of making photographs feel like memories.

That feeling was especially fitting for this wedding, from the historic architecture of the George Eastman Museum to the warm sunset portraits at Arbor Midtown. These film photographs add another layer to an already incredible wedding gallery and are some of my favorite images from the day.

A Rochester Wedding I Won’t Forget

Mariah and Nick's wedding had everything I love about photographing weddings: beautiful locations, genuine emotion, incredible portraits, and a packed dance floor.

From the gardens and historic architecture of the George Eastman Museum to the energy of Arbor Midtown, every part of the day gave me something different to photograph.

I am incredibly proud of how this gallery came together, and it is easily one of my favorite weddings of the year.

If you're planning a wedding at the George Eastman Museum, Arbor Midtown, or another Rochester venue, I would love to tell your story in the same candid, colorful, and timeless way.
